Psalm 23 (KJV)
1. The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
2. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: He leadeth me besides the still waters.
3. He restoreth my soul: He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for His Name's sake.
4. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
5. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
6. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of The Lord forever.
As you read this psalm by David, the question is who is your Shepherd ? But even more so, What is a shepherd and the responsibilities of one?
David wrote this psalm with knowledge of who and what a Shepherd is. What the responsibilities are. David knew all too well what a shepherd's job was. He, himself was a shepherd. He was found tending to sheep in 1 Samuel 16, when God sent Samuel to find the true king for Israel.
A shepherd provides protection for his sheep.
A shepherd provides comfort for his sheep.
A shepherd provides means of nourishment for his sheep.
A shepherd provides a place for rest for his sheep.
A shepherd provides for every need of his sheep.
As you think about it, David is correct. The Lord is our shepherd. God provides daily for every need we may have. And it isn't by chance that Jesus said in John 10:14
that he is the good shepherd. And His know him.
The question is, who is your shepherd? God, who will always provide for you or the world who will always be against you? (Matthew 6:30)
Who is your shepherd ? A God who is always with you or a world who would abandon you? (Matthew 28:20)
Who is your shepherd? A God who will give you rest when you are weary or a world who would knock you down?
Think about what you do have and how blessed you have been. Then you should be able to say, "The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want."
God Bless.
